The festive season is just around the corner, making this the perfect time to plan for an extra special trip to one of the many wonderful Christmas markets that can be found in Europe and of course, here in the UK.

With this in mind, we’ve brought together a few of the very best ones, each one easy to get to from one of our many UK departure points. Read on to discover a whole continent of festive fun!

Aachen 🇩🇪

German Christmas markets are known the world over for being the ultimate representation of festive spirit, and Aachen is arguably the very best example. This delightful historic city couldn’t look more picturesque, with its illuminated cathedral and brightly lit streets of festive treasures and attractions.

Bruges 🇧🇪

Bruges must go down as one of the most romantic settings for a Christmas Market, with its cobbled streets, historic medieval buildings and maze of canals beautifully illuminated to create a majestic atmosphere as horse and carts trudge by.

Browse the stalls laden with handmade Christmas goodies and tasty treats, test your skating skills on the ice rink and marvel at the ice sculptures at the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival.

Metz 🇫🇷

One of the largest Christmas markets in France, Metz’s yuletide offering covers all six of its central city squares. You’ll find all manner of stalls to choose from, whether you’re hunting for that extra special present, or indulging in wintery treats. The city’s major landmarks are also illuminated for that classic Christmas feel.

Arguably the UK’s most popular festive destination, the Manchester Christmas market brings hundreds of stalls and shops to the city centre. There are no less than 10 distinctive squares to visit, hosting vendors from all over the world – perfect for shopping, drinking and eating to your heart’s content.

Brussels 🇧🇪

European Christmas markets don’t come much better than the breathtaking display in Brussels. With the city’s beautiful architecture taking centre stage, the Christmas atmosphere is truly amazing. Spend some time skating on the city’s outdoor ice rink, enjoy the fairground festival rides, or shop for tasty treats and yuletide trinkets.

Cologne 🇩🇪

Cologne’s expansive city centre is home to numerous Christmas markets, making it perfect for families and couples that are looking for all manner of festive attractions. There’s the classic square in front of the stunning Cologne Cathedral, or the unique harbour market, in which boats and ships are dressed in sparkling lights and decorations. What’s Cologne is just a short distance from Aachen.

Leeds 🇬🇧

Inspired by classic German festivities, Leeds’ Christmas markets take place in the city’s main square, and incorporate all of the stalls you’d expect, offering everything from delicious traditional sweets, to gorgeous glassware.

Strasbourg 🇫🇷

Regularly voted the best Christmas market in the whole of Europe, Strasbourg’s festive village is a wonderful display of Alsatian culture and spirit It’s also the oldest recorded Christmas market on the continent, attracting revellers from countries far and wide to its fusion of French and German yuletide tradition.

Skipton 🇬🇧

Recognised as the gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, Skipton is a wonderful destination all year round. At Christmas however, for two Sundays in December, the town centre becomes a lively celebration of all things festive for the Skipton Christmas markets; combining all of the shopping delights you’d expect from an English market, with all manner of festive fun.
